Le vieux marquis de Jom, \u00e0 barbiche blanche, accuse un type cam prononc\u00e9; il parle le koho aussi bien que le churu comme d\u2019ailleurs la plupart des hommes de son village\u2026Hang-Dang nous offre un diner remarquable, \u00e9pic\u00e9 \u00e0 souhait. Son boy styl\u00e9 apporte \u00e0 la fin du repas le th\u00e9, les cure-dents et les serviettes chaudes. Mais tous les autres parlent le roglai-churu ou le chil, qui n\u2019ont que tr\u00e8s peu de mots communs avec le sr\u00ea. Il faut donc apprendre le roglai et traduire cat\u00e9chisme et pri\u00e8res en cette langue. Sa soeur est baptis\u00e9e, un des ses fr\u00e8res, le plus jeune, le sera bient\u00f4t. Le p\u00e8re de famille jouit d\u2019une grande autorit\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9gion. Il se convertit, malgr\u00e9 sa femme qui est vietnamienne et farouchement bouddhiste, et entraine ainsi cinq villages vers l\u2019Eglise. Bien que ne connaissant pas encore les principaux dogmes catholiques, il n\u2019h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 faire de v\u00e9ritables sermons devant la chapelle, avant ou apr\u00e8s la messe, et m\u00eame dans la chapelle lorsqu\u2019il croit devoir intervenir pour expliquer certaines paroles du pr\u00e9dicateur \u2013 qui ne s\u2019expriment pas assez clairement sans doute! \u2013 et qui doit attendre la fin des commentaires pour continuer. Leur langue diff\u00e8re de celle des Ourang-Gloai et des Cham du Binh-Thuan, mais ils comprennent le Cham dont beaucoup d\u2019expressions ont pass\u00e9 dans leur langue\u2026 Ils \u00e9l\u00e8vent des poulets en quantit\u00e9, ce doit \u00eatre leur nourriture ordinaire, les cochons sont \u00e9chang\u00e9s pour du sel en pays annamites, mais \u00e0 quel prix , au vingti\u00e8me de leur valeur r\u00e9elle.\u00a0 C\u2019est ainsi que les Annamites tiennent les sauvages sous le joug. Il faut bien du sel pour vivre cependant, il faut donc ob\u00e9\u1ec9r aux volont\u00e9s des Annamites\u2026Toutes les superstitions de ces tribus se ressemblent beaucoup; rien au fond que des niaiseries. Ils offrent quelquefois au ciel un buffle en sacrifice, ce qui arrive apr\u00e8s la moisson si elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 bonne. L\u2019objet principal de leur culte consiste presque partout en un carr\u00e9 de bois plus ou moins cisel\u00e9, d\u2019o\u00f9 pendent des franges faites de chanvre de ramie. Ce carr\u00e9 peut avoir 50 centim\u00e8tres de c\u00f4t\u00e9, et ces franges, 70 centim\u00e8tres de longeur. Il est suspendu d\u2019ordinaire au milieu de la maison en face de l\u2019entr\u00e9e principale. Mais jamais missionnaire n\u2019a encore pass\u00e9 dans ces contr\u00e9es, qui, en fertilit\u00e9, ne le c\u00e8dent pas \u00e0 l\u2019Annam. Ce pays m\u00eame \u00e9tait inconnu jusqu\u2019ici. Elles sont construites \u00e9galement sur des pieux, mais \u00e0 un m\u00e8tre de terre au plus; sous le plancher en bambou grouillent cochons, ch\u00e8vres et poules par centaines. Souvent m\u00eame les ch\u00e8vres et les poules sont appel\u00e9es \u00e0 partager un coin de l\u2019habitation des hommes. Aussi est-ce quelquefois une v\u00e9ritable infection. La porte de ces maisons ressemble \u00e0 celle d\u2019un chenil, tant elle est basse, j\u2019en ai mesure une qui n\u2019avait que 60 centim\u00e8tres de haut.
